The Importance of the Music Video
I watched a video report from the BBC's website about why the song "Gangnam Style" has become so popular in the UK. Here is the link to the article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19681887
The reporter mentions:
"Well, I think he's realized that the real path to success in our society these days is making a video that gets attention. His music is very lyrically forgettable and hes singing in Korean so, the majority of people who have seen his video don't really have err, a clue what he's talking about, but he's made a very, very memorable video in which he does all kinds of ridiculous things and he's got a dance which anyone can learn should they want to, so he's clearly a child of his times".
I find this is important since by creating an unique, rather "ridiculous" music video, the video itself becomes far more memorable by the target audience and other audience demographics than a music video which is not as funny, interesting, or unique as this. With currently "302,455,586" views, and "3,003,832 likes" - this clearly shows. (28th/Sep/2012 at 18:50). With every refresh of the page, the "likes" dramatically increase.
I'm not suggesting that my group's music video will be as funny, abstract or even as "ridiculous", but I find that the importance of our music video to be remembered is by our ideal target audience to make a successful music video in terms of, if it would be retailed in the future.
And remember:

Well done for posting this incongruous music video which is particularly strong on generic characteristics and some brilliant editing.

The singer, PSY (short for “Psycho”) says that the song (and of course, more importantly, the music video) is a satire on all those “posers and wannabes” who put on “Gangnam style” airs and “are trying so hard to be something that they are not”.
In a sense the artist is sending himself up, and I think the reason for the popularity of this guy is because he subverts the usual stereotypes in that he is a chubby middle aged man cleverly gavorting about with all the appartus/props associated with commercial pop videos - in other words he's taking the mick!
The strength of the music video is as I've mentioned the fast editing (to amplify the genre and the beat) and use of primary colours. Also a variety of locations, camera shots and angles.
Plenty of lessons can be learned from this music video, one of which is visual appeal, splendid editing and the use of irony.
Is it possible I could mention the above in your comment into my post to strengthen it? From the way you've worded it, I find it seems as if you are agreeing with me - I was wondering if it's either agreeing or a way to improve also, maybe both.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the article link too, it's very interesting.
